Coat progress

My coat has taken a spot on the back burner. School is getting in the way, and there is so much yet to do that it is starting to be really daunting. Before I felt like that I did do some work in it. It’s been cut out (the outer fabric and a form of interlining of which I’m not sure yet how to put it in) and the outer fabric has been sewn -> without the interlining, a slight miscalculation. Now I have to solve that, but there isn’t really time to think about it right now.

While I was cutting out the coat, my dad thought it would be a fantastic picture moment. This may have been because I did not want to use pins and therefore took all the mugs and bowls from my parents cupboard to put on the tissue as pattern weights. Our pottery (can I call it that?) collection is fairly.. colourful, so it made a nice picture as evidenced below:

I also made a fairly large length of bias tape from the orange stuff (here), and although it didn’t really go as planned (there was a lot of cursing involved), I can now probably salvage a long enough length for it to work. The project is now in a laundry bin in its entirety and I’m afraid it will stay there for a while. School comes first.

I need a new winter coat. So Saturday my dad and me went to the fabric market in Utrecht and located some nice fabrics. I need, need, need to make this coat quickly, since it’s cold and my current coat is fugly.

I’ve got navy blue wool, a bright blue for the lining and some orange for piping the lining-facing divide. I hope I can start and finish it soon, because I’m craving a nice looking winter coat, wish me luck!

Shirt fabric

On the left are the coat fabrics, dark blue, orange and lighter blue. I also bought a length of stretch stuff for a shirt. If you don’t see a post about this appearing within a couple of months, remind me about it.. I need to destash.

Experiment

I have been planning on making a coat for a while now. Since, you know, it’s winter in my part of the world. I found this pattern in a magazine that was available in the Netherlands and it’s this one. Now, I wanted to test it out before I cut into the wool I have. I still had 2 metres of this strange yellow knit fabric, and I needed a warm top of some sort. So I put 1 and 1 together and ended up with this:

It closes with hidden snaps (the buttons are not functional). The pattern in the magazine started at size 36-38, which I figured would be slightly too big, so I retraced all the lines approximately one size (so 32-34) smaller. When I cut it and sewed it up, I still had to take it in at least a cm on all seams, but now it fits quite nicely. There are inseam pockets in the side seams.

I’m quite happy to have it finished because now I am allowed to start something else (or I should really finish one of the other projects I have lying around). All in all though, I think this pattern will make a suitable coat, although I might make the one with the standing collar, as that seems warmer and more closed up than this version. Still, I’m happy with it. On to the coat, or so it seems!

Even More UFPs

This weekend was very productive for me. I finished two UFPs and started a new project.

The first UFP to be transformed into a FP was my coat. I started it in summer last year I think. But I stopped it when I decided it was too crooked. The fabric has a sort of plaid-y look, but I didn’t line them up, which I assume will be difficult with princess seams.
But since I aim to empty my UFP box before the end of the year (I’ve assigned myself that goal a minute ago), I have to work on some projects in there. And I still liked the fabric of the coat so I figured I’d finish it. I made an asymmetrical front, put pockets on and a hood. I finished all the seams and edges with red bias tape (it’s the same colour as the red stripe in the fabric). Here are the pictures, first front and back, then details of pockets and the inside:

The next project I finished was a petticoat. It’s been laying in the stash basically since I started the frog dress, so two years I think. It was a disaster, since I absolutely hate making ruffles or whatever those things are called that a petticoat are. But I worked steadily, pinned until my fingers were dead and finally finished the thing.

Here it is, I also attached some ribbons on the side to hide the seams but they are not very clear:

So after two UFPs I wanted to start something new (decided I deserved it). So I’m now patching together a pant suit from a free culottes pattern, the vintage blouse pattern and a pattern for some pants (to use the waistband). I hope it’ll work. I’ll show you when (/if) it’s done.
