Delayed Party-Pantsuit

I was supposed to attend a celebration halfway through March and was planning an outfit for that event. Unfortunately, Covid put a stop to it all. I’d started my new pantsuit in time and had it mostly finished by March 9. Then waited too long to seam the legs in the week of the event (in hopes that it would still go through). However, it took me until last week to actually finish the thing with all bells and whistles. The bells and whistles being a detachable bow-belt thing.

Usually I find a fabric and then look for a pattern with it. In this case, I’d found the pattern and went on a hunt for fabric. In the end, I chose a black and white ‘waffly’-thin-scuba something. I don’t even know how to describe it, but it has stretch in it and the back looks odd. The pantsuit was made from the fabric with the larger scale pattern and the bow from the smaller scale pattern fabric.

Anyway, the plan was to make this pantsuit from Knipmode nr. 9 2019, pattern nr 8. I’d needed to first see if it would fit, so I mocked up a short version of the pants and the top. I had to take in the top and reduce the length in the shoulder straps. When I tried on the shorts, I looked like I was wearing a diaper. So I gave up and used my regular pants pattern.

Since I wasn’t sure if I would always want to walk around with a giant bow on my front, I decided to make the bow detachable. I couldn’t figure out how I actually wanted the bow, so I procrastinated for, well, two and a half months. In the end I made belt loops, and added buttons to the bow. There are tiny thread loops on the suit, at the pockets, centre front and top, to hook the buttons into. I haven’t tested it out for any length of time, so the plan is to do that at some point. Perhaps once I’ve finished a blouse to wear with it, since it is very low in the back. I do like the abstract print of it, so we’ll see how it wears.

Put a Bow on it

[Update below!]

At some point I saw a girl with a large bow in her hair. I immediately wanted one too. This was… 2 years ago. Now, I know bows are not the most difficult objects to make, but apparently I was to lazy to actually do something about it. Until now!

I grabbed a bit of felt, cut a long strip, cut pointy bits on the two ends, did a bit of folding, a bit of sewing, some more cutting and I had myself a hair bow! Then I figured out that my hair is so dark, that my bow doesn’t actually show up very clearly in it… I may have to remedy that with another 5 minute bow in another colour.

I put a hair elastic on the back so that I could wear it. This seems to work fairly well. So I’m happy with it. Now I just need to see whether it will swoop down or fall out during the course of the day. On to testing it is!

UPDATE:

I decided that I indeed needed some more, after wearing the black one all day yesterday. So this morning I set out to create two more. One identical to yesterday’s but in red, and a blue bow with a clip on the back and no .. pointy end bits? Here they are!

And here’s how I wore it, for about 2 minutes (never do this in real life….). Also, in case you are wondering, yes, my hair is partly grey; natural highlights or so they say.

On a Roll (with a Bow!)

I finished the Duck skirt not long ago, and Saturday I decided to finished another UFO I had thrown in a bag in the corner (probably quite literally). See, I bought this knit fabic, it’s blue-green with turtles and apples and flowers and stuff on it (fairly.. childreny). I tried to get two shirts out of it, a while ago. I succeeded in cutting out the pieces and then my machine decided to stop working and I couldn’t figure out how to get the serger to do what I wanted. So I bagged the projects and threw them in the corner. Where they sat.. and sat .. and sat..

Today I got the bag out and finished one of the shirts. This one is a sleeveless top. Since I didn’t really have enough self fabric to finish the arm holes and neck, I took a bit of red stuff I’ve had in the closet for a while too (I’m still scared of knits, if I’m honest). I cut of a strip to finish the bits and decided I might as well use it to make a bow on the front. I’ve seen bow-blouses all around the net for a while now, and I figured I’d like one myself. If not, I can always cut the bow bit of and have a normal neckline, right?

So you might wonder what it looks like.. Don’t get scared, but here’s my fantastical kiddy top without sleeves but with a bow! Front and back first:

And a close(r)-up of the bow and the fabric. See all the cute little turtles and apples and flowers and stuff? The colour is closer to the first picture, but I couldn’t get the flash to cooperate nicely.

Now, I’ll hopefully finish the other shirt soon too!
