Spit Scarves

A friend of mine had a baby recently, and I’d been wandering around the Zeeman and found some spit scarves that I thought might be nice. Things you put around a baby’s neck, I presume, to keep them from getting spit, snot and other bodily fluids on their clothes. I knew that I still had some dinosaur construction worker and little monkey fabric that would suit a baby beautifully.

The tag on the originals said that they were 18 by 40 cm, so off home I went and cut out 20 x 42 cm triangles from the cute fabrics and linings of flannel in a similar blue. They were stitched right sides together, turned out through the hole left along the top and topstitched to close the hole. Then I added two ‘male’ snaps on the one side and one ‘female’ snap on the other side to make it adjustable. I ended up with four of them, two went to the friend and the other two will probably find a home sooner or later.

And here is mr. sultana backpack modelling the two spit scarves. He’s faded significantly from sitting in the window forever, but still cute as a button!

Arm Knitting

Since Tuesday, when the yarn was delivered, I’ve made a number of arm knit scarves. In almost all of them, I cast on 7 stitches provisionally, using an arm as crochet hook, and and arm as knitting needle. I would arm knit until I spotted a knot in the skein and finish knitting. I’d need about half a meter or more to kitchener stitch the stitches together.
This ended up resulting in a grey one and a yellow one that are slightly too long to single wrap and too short to double wrap.

For the double wrap blue-cream-green one, it’s a full skein and a little more of another skein. The remainder of that second skein was used for the doubled single-wrap version (right two pictures is the same thing). That was the only one that had 10 stitches cast on. These all did not take more than an hour or so each.

I’m finding that I quite enjoy arm knitting. It’s quick, easy, nice result and most of all, fun. I have another skein of grey and yellow and two of some blue/green/grey stuff that is less thick. So you might just see more giant knits.

Attempt at a Blanket

Quite a long time ago, I wanted to knit a blanked with different coloured yarn squares. I bought eight different colours and white and started knitting the white border. Then I started squares bordered by white. It was horrendous to knit..

It took forever to get as far as I got and I just gave up.

I stopped and started numerous times, but it didn’t really work, I wasn’t into it enough. So eventually, I knit a white border and started trying to get rid of all the yarn ends, there were two ends per colour and two ends for all white separators. It again, took forever to weave in all the ends.

Scarflet Scarflet

This is the result! I do think that it looks nice, but there is just too much work involved to continue to create a full blanket. For now, I might add some buttons and create a little scarflet or something out of it. Or maybe just decorative trim on my chair? Any other bright ideas?
