Blue Pants

I wanted to gift a pair of pajama pants to a family member recently. So I found a free pattern online from Life Sew Savory in size L. Once it was printed out, it was so large that the only fabric I could realistically use was the blue mask fabric. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a large pattern piece – there are no side seams, so that’s why it’s so enormous. I added a few centimetres to the bottom to increase the length, although I’m not sure if it was needed.

In the end, I put in the elastic at a later point in time based on a different pair of pants of the recipient. I haven’t yet seen if these actually fit, so that’s still a guess. For now, I’m quite happy that I did manage to finish them and I still love the colour.

Compared to me, they are certainly quite large…

Entire Bedtime Jester Suit

When one finishes a Night Clown Jacket, they also need Evening Harlequin Pants to complete the Bedtime Jester Suit (BJS). That is exactly what I did last night. After work, I decided that it was high time to complete the BJS. I used the same pattern that I’ve used for all my other pairs of pyjamas (Burdastyle 7-2010, pattern 132). I did have to trace a little bit from the original pattern as I’ve managed to lose a pattern piece in its entirety.

I wanted to have the front be the same colour in the middle, probably just because I thought it would look nice. I actually managed to cut it out according to plan and I have half a meter left over, so I’m really quite happy with that. It could be enough to make something fun like a colourful poppy or so.

These are the pants. No real surprises there I guess. Construction was done on the serger for leg and crotch seams. I used the regular sewing machine for the top bit, that folds over to encase some elastic.

The length keeps me warm, even if it looks like I’ve got bow legs, which I don’t, but I’m actually very happy with how that turned out. Apparently this fabric creases like no one’s business, but it is for in bed, so who cares. I would also like to present the completed Bedtime Jester Suit for all of you to peruse.

I like the fact that the top and bottom do not match. I think it would look weird if they did. I could always wear the pants the wrong way round and see if that would indeed look odd, but for now, I’ll leave it as is. I did already sleep in it, and apart from having to open the button when removing the top, it’s fantastic. I might decide to never do up the top button, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Pyjamas again (Part 1)

I like pyjamas. I like sleeping in them, I like walking about the house in them and I sometimes even venture outside in them (though rarely). I also find that I like sewing pyjamas because I can make them as large and long as I want, with pants that is the case anyway. So the last time I went to the fabric market, I also got 3 meters of owly flannely stuff. I have since finished both pants and the jacket, but the pants were done first so they will be blogged first.

Here we go!

I like my pyjama bottoms long and wide, I used the same pattern as for the previous iterations (here and here). I laid my pattern such that there would be two owls on the front of the pants and one on the back, while attempting to keep an owl intact that was printed further down and I wanted to keep whole. It took days for the cutting to occur. I wasn’t really feeling it, then the switch was flicked and it was all done and dusted within a couple of hours.

I serged all the seams, as I managed to figure out the correct tension! This was an achievement only accomplished after an hour of fiddling, I finally succeeded after replacing the needle… Why did I not think of that sooner.. After the needle change it was only 2 more tries to get something decent enough to serge the entire thing with. I serged the bottom and folded it over as hem. Inserted elastic in the casing before sewing the casing and Tada! Pants! With Owls!

Proof is here:

Again, not the most flattering of pants, but they are nice and warm and if everything else fails I can point at the owl! One thing I did change from the previous versions was adding a back pocket (just one). The second picture shows the outline of said pocket because it’s camouflaged (sort of). I wanted a pocket because I often wander around the house and not having pockets is not very nice, to say the least.

Here is a close up of the owls that are on my new pants. Aren’t they cute?!

The next installment of Pyjamas again will cover the jacket and total owliness of my new PJs.

PJ’s again

I’ve been having a slight problem with my PJ pants in that there is an unmendable tear in them. I tend to have this with PJ pants after about a year. I used to always get pajamas for Sinterklaas and then I’d need new ones by next years Sinterklaas. However, I didn’t feel like buying any this year, as I could only find ones with Snoopy or Betty Boop (and I do not like those characters at all). So when I was snooping around in a fabric closet, I found a yellow bed sheet, the same kind I used to make my short PJ pants. The pattern for that also provided a long-legged version, and since it is winter (or so the calendar says, the weather has not been very cooperative) I decided that those would be nice.

So I sorted through the stack of pattern magazines and found the one I needed and made the long legs and attached them to my previous patterns, I figured out a cutting scheme (this took some time) and cut the bits. I always seem to feel (note, feel. I don’t think it’s the case) that cutting fabric and copying patterns takes the longest. Especially marking darts and stuff, dislike that. However, after a couple of episodes of Glee, my easter PJ pants are done.

I know, I will not be the hottest babe at any sleep over party in these, but to be frank: I don’t aim to be, so all is good. Now to further fight the dress.

PJs

Although this summer has seen absolutely terrible weather. It was Summer for one month in Spring and has been Autumn ever since. Terrible rain, depressing skies, grey everything basically. But sometimes there was still a little heat left over from an otherwise blah day, and my PJ pants were hot. So today (much too late since it’s almost Winter now) I finished the short PJ pants that I decided to make a couple of days ago. I was planning to do it yesterday but the sash making got in the way. Anyways, it’s not sexy or appealing, but it’s soft and made from the poppy fabric, I present you with: short PJ pants.
