Quick Leftover Poppy

After five years, this leftover has become a thing and the hoard is now organized and slightly more empty.

At the start of September, I bought a whole load of new plastic bins to reorganize my hoard. While checking every single bit of fabric, and deciding whether I wanted to keep them, I found some scraps of the red plaid fabric that I used for these linings. I thought, ‘I need to use these or chuck these. They are not staying here for five more years’. So I made another poppy. I think he’s very cute and it’s always good to have some of those in stash for when I murder my own or have someone to gift one too.

I am still exceedingly happy with the way the hoard looks now. 12 boxes of fabric, two of yarn (in this room), a stack of small boxes with lace and haberdashery items and the remainder of the craft supplies in the top row of boxes.

Yellow – Turquoise – Orange

Made some baby gifts from self-dyed yarn and other happy fabric.

Baby gift time again! First up, dyeing. On the last day of 2022, the second dye project was a single skein of Chester Wool DK 115 (Worsted) 50s. It is 100% merino and has 50 grams in a skein for around 100 meters of yarn. Since I still had soft yellow dye stock left from the other dyeing I did that day, I put 20 ml of the stock in my pot. Then I added several resists around the skein and dropped the thing into the pot. When it had simmered for long enough, I took it out and dyed the resists turquoise. I couldn’t resist adding some speckles and chose orange. All in all this meant that the skein turned out extremely bright and cheerful. If you ask me, perfect for a baby.

Since there was going to be a new baby, I set out to make some baby things and settled on these two patterns: Easy Peasy Baby Ball by A la Sascha and Tiny Tot by Kristen Rettig. One is a rectangle hat with tassels or pompoms and the other is a ball. I used up the entire skein in the making of these projects, so no leftovers!

I’ve also had a bit of flannel in the stash with a similar colour scheme. There’s also some additional red and green, but I wouldn’t let that stop me. The flannel was bought to make some poppies, so I set out to do exactly that. I tried to make these somewhat symmetrical with the plaid, so the scale was based on that. There’s some difference between these two poppies, one has a green stripe near the head, the other green. One has larger hands, the other smaller, but they are still very similar.

Both knitting patterns were quick, easy to knit and went smoothly. Of course the hat is way too big for the recipient, but I guess my track record stays intact on that score. The last item for the little baby was a spit scarf. Now with skateboarders, rope jumpers and a terry cloth back. It feels very soft even if the snap is on the wrong edge.

I hope the little one will have a marvelous and colourful life!

All the Blue

I mad some blue things to cover my face and to snuggle with.

I don’t like doing laundry, I do like finding cute images on the internet and I still had a length of blue fabric left.. So I made more facemasks, assembly style, on the Pfaff 130-6. After finishing the drawings and ironing those, I sewed up the facemasks. Afterwards, some elastic was added too, but I took the picture before completing that last step.

This time I made twelve facemasks, all in the same blue as last time. Why change a winning combination?! The image sources are available in the description.

I also found some very soft blue flannel and made some more poppies. They are identical apart from the stitching around the head. It’s a little wider with one of the two. I made a pattern for the little hands and feet this time (basically just cut out a quarter circle from a piece of paper). I’ve saved that piece of paper in my pattern stash.

These two things are not the only blue things I’ve been making in the past few months, but they deserve their own posts so you’ll see those soon. *Must find the motivation to write!

More Baby Stuff

Next to the spit scarf from last post, I also made some more baby stuff. A colleague is possibly interested in sending something to a recent born, so I got myself to work to increase my already sizeable baby-junk-pile. I started with making another Poppy, similar to the other plaid poppy. The main difference is that this one is slightly smaller and has a smaller head in comparison. It’s still cute though.

I followed it up with a simplified poppy. This was just two squares sewn together with a stuffing filled pantyhose for a head. Since this head was already in a point, it didn’t even need a hat. He is still really quite cute, if I say so myself.

All in all, I’m still surprised to have so many things for babies when I’m not the greatest fan of them. Who knows, perhaps someone will like these things.

Plaid Poppy

When I went to the fabric market in Utrecht the last time, I also bought some really, really soft white/red plaid flannel fabric. I cut out a rectangle and smaller rectangle, brought a bit of pantyhose and tons of stuffing and set off on the train for a friend’s birthday party. During the trip, I set off to sew a new poppy. Not that I needed one, but the fabric was soo soft that I couldn’t resist.

The hat was embroidered on using red thread and I think it looks quite cute. This probably will not be the last one I make from this fabric, although I may decide to dye it first for the next go. Not sure though, I guess we’ll see.

Quick Projects

So on Friday I finished two more quick projects.  The first was another poppy (e.g. here) since there are people in my distant surroundings multiplying, seemingly voluntary. This one was made from a new flannel sheet. I’m debating making another one for myself (or adopting this one, still deciding).

For the first time I actually measured the distance between stitches for the hat, so this one is, I think, the neatest stitched one.

Project 2 is a bag. Well, it was not a bag, it was a top. Friends of mine gave me a top with a flamingo on it since it was an S. However, the arm holes were so deep that I would be uncomfortable wearing it. I decided to remove the neck binding and cut out the back as deep as the front. I then sewed the bottom together and added some corners. I also folded over the neck and stitched it down with a twin needle. This project has been half-finished for weeks. I just needed to get my act together and actually do the stitching, so luckily I managed to do that!

It is so deep that I couldn’t find anything that would stick out the top – seriously. I tried cutting boards, drinks, shoes? That’s why you get the ugly inside shot. Now on to using this cutie.

Colours!

This will be a double feature involving two projects with a lot of colour! Let us start with the obligatory Easter eggs. As you may know, I have this ‘tradition’  of painting hard-boiled eggs for Easter, proof can be found here, here and here.

This year was a little different though. I was not at my parents house for Easter and I therefore couldn’t force my mum to hide eggs in the yard. I was also alone and would not be able (or willing) to eat an enormous amount of eggs to facility my painting habits. Moreover, I didn’t have time (or energy) on the Saturday to paint my eggs. So Sunday morning, when I woke up, I put my laundry in the machine and boiled two eggs. I let them cool in a pan with cold water and after 15 minutes or so, I took them out to paint.

What to paint on my two glorious eggs. I googled a bit and decided on the classics, polka dots and stripes. I used my (new-ish) watercolour paints and dotted the first egg with some nice colours. The second egg was made with different colour stripes. Tadaaa!

I also ate them approximately 3 minutes after taking the picture.. Egg salad on pita bread (empty cupboard and shops closed for Easter), it was nice though!

The second project was based on a suggestion by my mother. She said that I should make a poppy (more information here and here) from my left over pyjama fabric. So I did. As the fabric is so differently coloured, the poppy is red on the from and blue on the back. I chose to make the little hat in green/yellow. I like it.

Here it is sitting up.

So these were my two colourful projects. I liked them, and I hope to keep the eggs tradition alive. Someone needs to paint for the Easter bunny, right?!

Kiddy-presents

Although my previous post was from a finished project. I soon discovered that I’d actually forgot to post about this project I finished way before that. Half June, the lady who supervised my thesis went on pregnancy leave. I wanted to make her and the kid a little present. I came up with a poppy, again.

This time I didn’t know the sex of the baby, and I had apparently used up all my yellow poppy suitable fabric. I only had blue left, and didn’t like that very much. So on the hunt  I went, to find myself a new bit of soft fabric that I could make a poppy from. I eventually found some red and green and white striped/blocked/whatevered fabric that was suitable enough. I’d apparently already used a bit at some other point and therefore it was missing a little bit. I trimmed of the other end also. I put the body together and added the head. When that was all finished, I needed a hat for it. I figured I could sew the offcuts together to make a bigger strip and that could be the hat. So I did just that.

It’s a bit Christmassy, but this is the final result. I think he’s cute.

Poppy

She seemed to like it too, so that was good.

In other news, I handed in my thesis on Wednesday and have received the results. I scored a 7.65 out of 10, which means I’ve passed my thesis and am now waiting for the secretariat to input the grade into the system and make me graduate! Yay! I’ll be a ‘, MSc’  soon!

Present

I made a present for a friend of mine. It has just been his birthday, and I saw him the day after so I figured I’d make him a present. I have the feeling that he likes and/or needs hugs sometimes. So I decided to make him a little stuffed toy. It’s a very soft yellow fabric from my recent fabric market haul. I always figure that with present it is the idea that counts, and not necessarily the execution or the actual thing you give.

He knows I also sleep with one of those ‘poppy’s’, so I decided to give him one, so he knows that there’s someone thinking about him too. I forgot to take a picture, but it’s really similar to this one. The main differences are: it’s yellow, it’s got ~knuffel (this is the Dutch word for hug) and my name embroidered on it and it’s a bit over stuffed.

He seemed to quite like it, the idea anyways, and I got a text the other day with a picture of it, so that was nice. I’m still working on the dress for larp (it’s now been practically done for weeks, I need to add a lining to the skirt, hem them and possibly make a hook-eye closure for the top of the skirt), which, if I make the time, could be done in an afternoon. Wish me luck on that!

PJs

Although this summer has seen absolutely terrible weather. It was Summer for one month in Spring and has been Autumn ever since. Terrible rain, depressing skies, grey everything basically. But sometimes there was still a little heat left over from an otherwise blah day, and my PJ pants were hot. So today (much too late since it’s almost Winter now) I finished the short PJ pants that I decided to make a couple of days ago. I was planning to do it yesterday but the sash making got in the way. Anyways, it’s not sexy or appealing, but it’s soft and made from the poppy fabric, I present you with: short PJ pants.
